Life Saver

I spoke in my blog "Getting Puppy Ready" about getting a Dog Play Pen for your puppy. Well today I am going to tell you why it is such a life saver, on when to use it, and you best believe you will get some funny stories along the way.

This is no secret but puppies can be a handful. You have to watch them like a hawk. They are so new with life that everything is fun and exciting for them. Even if they are getting in to something they aren't supposed to. My husband actually suggested this, and I honestly didn't think I would use it but let me tell you it really was a life saver.

Just because you have a new puppy it doesn't mean that everyday life stops. You still have to cook dinner, shower, and do chores around the house. Which can be challenging with a new puppy. This play pen was wonderful. When I was cooking, cleaning, or taking a shower I would put her in it. Now if you are like me, I did not like the idea at all. I would even call it puppy jail. But it really did grow on me. I think what changed my mind was on night I was cooking spaghetti. Well I just had her in the kitchen with me, at this point I was still being rebellious. I took my noodles off the stove to drain them in the sink when she ran right under my feet. Luckily in our house at the time the kitchen was right by the stove so I was able to get it in the sink. That was my realization, that could of really hurt her or me. I couldn't be mad at her, she didn't know better. I could only be mad at myself. Once I calmed down and made sure she was okay. I decided to pick her up and put her in the play pen.

To my disbelief she didnt mind it at all. She was in little dog heaven. You see we set up the play pen in our living room. We put puppy pads on the floor, she had her dog bed in there, and she had her toys. Disclaimer, the puppy pads worked really good for probably a good week or two. Then she figured out she could ripe them apart. That was a fun surprise. Now even though she had her dog bed, and toys in her play pen. We didn't like to keep her in there for very long. She was mostly in her play pen when I was cooking dinner, In the shower, when I was taking the other dogs to go potty, or if I just needed to do something in the house that I thought she might be hurt.

There were sometimes MeatBall would be playing with Mr. Weenie ( our dashound) so when it was time to put her in the play pen he would go right in there with her. This one time they were playing and MeatBall shut the gate of it closed so then Mr. Weenie was in the play pen by his self. Then she just walked away like that was her plan all along. When she was about maybe a month, month and a half she was listening to us better so we wasnt using the play pen very often. Plus she figured out how to move it while she was inside it. I was cooking one day, and I could hear some commotion in the living room. I walked over to look to see what it was and she had pushed that play pen all of the way over to the couch so she could try to play with Sadie ( our boxer) that was laying on the couch. That is when we decided that she out grew her play pen.

Please let me know if you have any questions or comments I would be happy to reply.
